The CIAO 4.0 Data Analysis System
Abstract
The Chandra X-ray Center has released a new version of the CIAO analysis system, CIAO 4.0, which provides, among other new features, improved infrastructure for user scripting in the Slang and (for the first time) Python languages. A redesign of the ChIPS plotting application and a beta release of the revised Sherpa modeling and fitting program, together with the packaging of the Crates high level interface to data I/O allows users to access and manipulate data arrays more easily and directly with less need for intermediate files. The system is now fully GPL compliant, and includes limited support for source builds. The beta release of an ASCII kernel to the Data Model tools enables CIAO-style filtering on tables in text files. ChIPS features publication quality plots, advanced undo and redo commands and fine control of object (curve, axis, etc.) attributes. We will present an overview of the CIAO4.0 components and highlight changes to the software that have a direct impact for users.
